What Causes Gingivitis?

- Rinse your mouth with salt water
Take half a teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water. Swish the solution in your mouth for up to 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do this at least twice every day. Salt helps in increasing the pH- balance inside the mouth, creating a much more alkaline oral environment in which the bacteria are no longer able to thrive.
- Increase Vitamin C intake
Vitamin C helps keep the connective tissues in the gums healthy and strong. It is also essential for producing a structural protein called collagen, which is an integral part of your gums. And so, Vitamin C deficiency can lead to bleeding. Start eating more oranges, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and bell peppers.
- Drink green tea
This may not be your favorite brew to drink, but green tea contains catechin, a natural antioxidant that can lower the body’s inflammatory response to bacteria. (Antioxidants also reduce the risk of some cancers).
- Practice oil pulling
Take one tablespoon of oil (coconut, sesame, or olive) and swish it around in your mouth for 15-20 mins, first thing in the morning. Spit the oil into the trash bag and brush your teeth. Oil pulling detoxifies the oral cavity and helps reduce plaque. It also prevents bad breath.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush
Toothbrushes with soft and angled bristles effectively remove food and plaque from your teeth. They increase the pH- balance inside the mouth, creating a much more alkalie oral environment in which the bacteria can no longer won’t trigger the already weak gums, giving the gums time to heal. These measures will make your gums healthier and help treat gingivitis.
