How to Get the Most Out of Your Insurance
Dental insurance can be confusing, but understanding a few key details can help you save money and get the care you need. Here are some tips to help you maximize your dental insurance benefits:
- Schedule your preventive visits twice a year — most plans cover these at 80-100%
- Don't let your annual maximum go to waste — use your benefits before they reset at the end of the year
- Address dental issues early — small problems are usually covered at a higher percentage than major ones
- Ask our team to pre-authorize treatments so you know your costs upfront
Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Dental insurance is designed to help cover the cost of your dental care, but it works differently from medical insurance. Most dental plans are based on a fee schedule and cover a percentage of the cost of treatment, depending on the type of procedure.
Most plans include an annual maximum (the most your insurance will pay in a calendar year), a deductible (the amount you pay before insurance kicks in), and co-pays or coinsurance (your share of the cost after the deductible is met).
What Your Dental Insurance Covers
Preventive Care (80-100% covered)
Most plans cover preventive services like cleanings, exams, and X-rays at 80-100%. These services are designed to help you maintain good oral health and catch problems early, when they're easier and less expensive to treat.
Restorative Care (50-70% covered)
Restorative procedures like fillings, crowns, bridges, and root canals are typically covered at 50-70%. These treatments are necessary to repair damaged or decayed teeth and restore your oral health.
Cosmetic Care (NOT typically covered)
Cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening, veneers, and gum recontouring are generally not covered by dental insurance, as they are considered elective. However, we offer flexible financing options and our in-house discount plan to help make these treatments affordable.
